Mark Lamberti: Non-Executive Chairman

For the past 30 years Mark (B Com (Unisa), MBA (Wits) PPL (Harvard)) has served in an executive or non-executive capacity on the boards of various public companies in the retail, technology, media, and telecommunications fields and as chairman or a director of a number of industry associations and educational institutions.

On 1 July 2007, after serving for almost 19 years as the architect and leader of Massmart Holdings Limited, Mark retired as deputy chairman and chief executive to become non-executive chairman of the board. In 2011, Walmart purchased a 51% controlling share of Massmart and invited Mark to remain as Chairman of the reconstituted board.

Mark joined Transaction Capital in July 2008 as executive chairman and in keeping with good corporate practice, relinquished the chairmanship in September 2009.

In addition to various directorships, Mark is an Honorary Adjunct Professor of Business Administration at Wits Business School. Mark's achievements have been widely acknowledged throughout his career,  most notably as the 2001 winner of the Ernst & Young South Africa’s Best Entrepreneur Award and the 2004 winner of the Italian South African Businessman of the Year Award.

Stuart Stone: Chief Executive Officer

Stuart, a chartered accountant and a highly successful entrepreneur, is the Chief Executive Officer. Stuart was a founding shareholder in several successful businesses including Credit Direct, a joint venture with African Bank Investments Limited [ABIL]. Upon selling the remaining equity to African Bank, Stuart and the rest of his team joined African Bank and helped bed down their various acquisitions and strategies. Stuart co-founded Bayport together with Grant Kurland.

Martin Freeman: Origination Director

Martin has a strong history in activating and successfully growing companies and was the founder of Credit Direct KZN in the late 1990's, which rapidly became the largest credit originator in South Africa. Martin was appointed the head of Direct Sales at ABIL when Credit Direct was acquired, and was responsible for designing its mobile business model which has become the benchmark for direct sales in the South African micro-finance industry. Martin co-founded Bayport Financial Services and has successfully grown the company to one of the largest non-bank credit providers in South Africa.

Stephen Williamson: Chief Financial Officer

Stephen is a chartered accountant and is the Chief Financial Officer of Bayport. Stephen joined Bayport in 2008 as a Financial Analyst specifically focused on financial modelling. Stephen was appointed as CFO in March 2010 and is a member of the Executive Committee, Credit Committee and serves on the company and subsidiary boards.

Len de Villiers: Chief Information Officer

Len De Villiers has 25 years experience in the IT industry and was educated at RAU, Wits, Insead (France) and Harvard (USA). He began his career in 1978 in IT management positions at BP, Metro Cash and Carry and Gencor. In 1986 he joined First National Bank as GM of IT, followed by 3 years as MD of Microdata and Executive Director at Datakor Holdings. In 1993 he joined the Nedbank Group as GM of Technology and Architecture and progressed to Managing Director of Central and Branch Operations for the entire Nedcor Group. He won several top achiever awards as well as the CEO award in 1998. He was appointed MD of Nedbank Group Operations in 2003 and as MD of Nedbank’s Group Technology and Support Services from August 2004 until September 2008. He left as the Group CIO and joined Absa Bank in August 2008 as the Group CIO. He piloted a 5-year Strategic Technology Plan for the Absa Group articulating the technology plans and initiatives necessary to create and support the underlying technology required for the new “One Absa” Strategy. In 2009 he was voted The Most Admired CIO in South Africa by the CIO Council of SA consisting of the Top 200 CIO’s in South Africa. He left the Absa Group as the Group CIO and joined Bayport Financial Services as the Group CIO during January 2012.

Ian Wood: Chief Risk Officer

Ian Wood, A Chartered Secretary with extensive financial services and unsecured lending experience gained via 19 years at Edcon , the largest credit retailer in Southern Africa where Ian was the executive responsible for the Financial Services Division where he led the Division from being a cost center into a profit center that contributed almost 25 % of group earnings. Ian also spent time as the Director responsible for the American Express Card program in Nedbank and the product Director for card and unsecured lending in personal and business banking for Standard Bank Africa. As a past director and president of the Institute of Credit Managers as well as being a past chairman and committee member for the Credit Providers Association Ian contributed to industry bodies and their direction including influence on the crafting of the National Credit Act which evolved until he represented the credit clothing retailers views to the parliamentary subcommittee during public hearings in Parliament.

Eddy Shapiro: Cellular Director

Eddy completed his articles at PKF. Post articles he travelled and worked in London. On his return to South Africa in 2001 he joined Theta Investments, the private equity incubator of ABIL. In 2003, Eddy left ABIL to spearhead the corporate finance function creating Transaction Capital and its initial subsidiaries MBD, PIC Solutions and SA Taxi Finance and the subsequent merger with the ATM Solutions Group. In addition he has represented the executive shareholders as a director on various boards of the portfolio companies since the inception of the Group. After working with Mark Lamberti in a mentorship role in 2008 he was appointed the commercial executive of Transaction Capital in 2010 to focus on Group collaboration. In 2011 Eddy joined Bayport as the commercial director.

Justin Chola: Non Executive Director

Justin Chola, holds a Masters of Business Administration (MBA) from Cornell University, USA as well as a Bachelor of Science (B Sc) from the University of Newcastle Upon Tyne, UK. Justin has a wealth of experience in the financial services and information technology sectors acquired in various key management positions. He is currently the Chief Executive Officer of Bayport Financial Services Zambia.

Grant Colin Kurland: Non-Executive Director

Grant studied for three years towards a Bachelor in Business Science in Actuarial Science at UCT before joining Nando’s in 1992, where he developed Nando’s franchises abroad, including several African countries. In 1999, he joined Credit Direct, a micro-credit operation, which was acquired by ABIL in 2000. Grant was appointed the head of sales at ABIL, and was responsible for designing its branch and mobile business models, which have become the benchmark in the South African micro-lending industry. Grant co-founded Bayport Management Ltd together with Stuart Stone, and is CEO of Bayport Management Ltd.

Michael Mendelowitz: Non-Executive Director

Michael completed his articles at Deloitte & Touche in 1990. Michael has developed, over many years, the skill in identifying great owner-managed companies. Historically these companies have been niched operations within the financial sector. His experience as joint-chief executive officer of Nisela for over five years taught him to recognise and implement growth strategies, a skill he utilises today for Transaction Capital.

Rob Rossi: Non-Executive Director

Rob founded Miners Credit Guarantee (MCG) in 1991 to provide credit card type facilities to mine workers. MCG developed a network of over 300 retailers serving 150 000 clients. During 2003 MCG was integrated into ABIL and Rob sold his remaining shares to ABIL. In 2003 after ABIL merged Theta Investments and ABIL, he left ABIL and, together with Jonathan Jawno and Michael Mendelowitz, acquired the group of companies that merged with ATM Solutions Group (now Paycorp Holdings) to form Transaction capital in 2006.

Jonathan Jawno: Non-Executive Director

Jonathan co-founded Stratvest with Michael Mendelowitz in 1995. In 1997 ABIL acquired 50% of Stratvest, leading to the formation of Nisela Growth Investments. Together with Messrs Rossi and Mendelowitz, Jonathan went on to acquire a number of companies that were merged with Paycorp to form Transaction Capital. He is currently the Deputy Chief Executive of Transaction Capital. Jonathan holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree and a Graduate Diploma in Accounting from the University of Cape Town, and qualified as a Chartered Accountant (SA) after completing his articles at Arthur Andersen in 1990.

David Hurwitz: Non- Executive Director

David holds a Bachelor of Accounting (Honours) degree from the University of the Witwatersrand, a Higher Diploma in Tax and qualified as a Chartered Accountant (SA) after completing his articles at Kessel Feinstein in 1997. Following 10 years of experience in capital markets he joined Transaction Capital in 2005 and established and led a Debt Capital Markets division responsible for the raising of over R12 billion debt capital to date. David is currently the Group Chief Financial Officer of Transaction Capital.

Leann Coetzer: Human Capital Director

Leann Coetzer is the Human Capital Director at Bayport, and joined the team in May 2012.  Prior to joining Bayport, Leann spent 12 years in the BPO industry on both international and local business with experience in all parts of Africa.  Leann also has banking and financial experience as part of the early part of her career. Leann holds two degrees in Clinical Psychology, and various other qualifications in the Industrial Relations field. Leann achieved two prestigious People Awards at the Annual Business Process enabling South Africa (BPeSA) African star Awards. She received awards for Best HR service provider and Top number of jobs created. Leann also won international acclaimed awards for corporate governance and top HR Executive.
