Teachers are everyday heroes. They shape futures in the classroom, but their influence goes far beyond textbooks and chalkboards. Many of us can remember that one teacher who taught us more than maths or history. We remember that teacher who taught us how to believe in ourselves, how to stay disciplined, or even how to manage our lives more wisely.
Teachers are often the quiet champions in our communities. Every day they bring patience, order, and creativity to classrooms. Many also bring clever money habits to life without calling them that, because what teachers do best is plan well. Lesson plans, timetables, and preparation mean teachers rarely leave things to chance. They are experts at stretching a small budget, planning carefully, and making the most out of limited resources. These are the same skills we all need in our financial lives.
Practical money lessons from teachers:
- Stretch what you have: Just as teachers make limited classroom supplies last, we can stretch our income by cutting wasteful spending and focusing on what truly matters. #KnowMore about where your money goes so you can say #NoMore to unnecessary costs.
- Side hustles can help: Many teachers mark papers, tutor, or run small businesses on the side. The lesson? Use your skills to create an extra stream of income, no matter how small. Even an extra few hundred rand a month can ease pressure on your budget.
- Plan for tomorrow: Teachers plan lessons weeks in advance. We can do the same with our money by saving a portion of today’s earnings for retirement, school fees, or unexpected costs. Planning ahead is one of the most powerful ways to avoid money stress.
Celebrating teachers with #TeachersTeachMoney
This October, Bayport is celebrating teachers not only for the knowledge they share, but also for the smart money habits they inspire. That is why we are launching the #TeachersTeachMoney competition.
1. How to enter:
- Teachers post their best money tip (for example, a budgeting hack, saving method, or stress-management tip).
- Posts can be on Facebook, LinkedIn, or a TikTok video.
- Must tag Bayport South Africa’s social media and use the hashtag #TeachersTeachMoney.
- Include the name of the school where you teach. Tag your school too, if they have socials.
2. Eligibility:
- Open to teachers at recognised schools (primary, high school, tertiary) in South Africa only.
- Multiple entries allowed, but each must be a unique money tip.
3. Judging:
- Shortlist: Bayport will appoint a panel to curate the best posts based on creativity and practicality.
- Engagement: Likes and shares can influence the shortlist, but will not be the sole deciding factor.
- Final winners: Winners will be announced by Bayport at the end of October.
Honouring our everyday heroes
Teachers teach us more than subjects. They teach us life. This Teachers’ Month, let’s honour them by learning from their financial wisdom, so we can all #KnowMore about money and say #NoMore to financial stress.
