    Kickstart your finances for 2025

By Bayport Editorial Team | Financial Wellness, Budgeting, Debt Management, Financial Goals, Money Management, Saving | Comments are Closed | 23 December, 2024 | 1

The start of a new year is an excellent opportunity and the perfect time to take charge of your finances. With a fresh mindset and a few simple steps, you can set the foundation for a financially successful 2025.

    Step 1: Create a budget
A budget is your financial roadmap – it shows you where your money is going and helps you decide where to make adjustments. Without a budget, it’s easy to overspend or lose track of your goals.

    How to start:

    1. Write down all your income sources. Include your salary, side hustles, or any other earnings.
    2. List all expenses. Be thorough – include fixed costs like rent and insurance, as well as variable costs like groceries, transport, and entertainment.
    3. Subtract your expenses from your income. If the result is negative, identify where you can cut back. Use tools like a budgeting app or a simple spreadsheet to track your spending. Review your budget monthly to stay on top of changes.

Step 2: Build an emergency fund
Life is unpredictable, and having an emergency fund can prevent financial stress during unexpected events. This fund acts as a safety net for car repairs, medical bills, or other surprises.

    How to start small:
Even saving as little as R100 a month adds up over time. The key is consistency.
    – Open a dedicated savings account to keep this money separate.
    – Set up an automatic transfer to make saving effortless.

If you save R200 per month, you’ll have R2,400 saved by the end of the year –enough to cover a minor emergency without using credit.

    Step 3: Set financial goals
Having clear goals gives you something to work towards and keeps you motivated. These goals can be short-term (saving for a holiday), medium-term (paying off a credit card), or long-term (buying a home).

    How to make it work:

    • Be specific: Instead of saying “I want to save money,” set a goal like “I will save R10,000 for a family trip by November.”
    • Break it down: Divide your goal into smaller, achievable steps. For example, save R1,000 per month for 10 months.
    • Track progress: Celebrate milestones along the way to stay motivated.

    Step 4: Manage debt wisely
Debt can feel overwhelming, but with a plan, you can take control. Start by understanding how much you owe and to whom.

    How to prioritise payments:

    • Pay off high-interest debts first, like credit cards. This saves money in the long run.
    • Alternatively, focus on paying off the smallest debt first for a quick win. This approach, known as the “snowball method”, builds confidence. Avoid taking on new debt unless absolutely necessary. If you must borrow, ensure the repayment terms fit within your budget.

Step 5: Review and adjust regularly
Your financial situation may change during the year, so it’s important to revisit your budget, savings, and goals regularly.
    – Schedule a monthly check-in to review your progress.
    – Make adjustments as needed, such as reallocating funds or updating goals if your income changes.

    Looking ahead to 2025
2024 was a year of growth and learning, and now it’s time to take what you’ve learned and move forward. Use those learnings to THRIVE financially in 2025. Whether you’re building your emergency fund, managing debt, or pursuing your goals, we’re here to support you every step of the way.

Let’s make 2025 a year of financial empowerment, one step at a time. Together, we can achieve more.

    The snowball method:
Snowballing is a way to pay off debt by starting small and building momentum. You focus on paying off your smallest debt first while making minimum payments on the rest. Once the smallest debt is cleared, you use the money you were paying there to tackle the next smallest debt, and so on. This creates a “snowball” effect, where each success gives you more money and motivation to pay off bigger debts.

It’s called a snowball because it’s like rolling a small snowball down a hill. As it rolls, it picks up more snow and grows bigger and faster. Similarly, when you pay off a small debt, you free up more money to tackle the next debt. With each debt paid off, your ability to pay off bigger ones grows, just like a snowball gaining size and speed as it rolls downhill.
