Safe online shopping – tips for protecting yourself

By Bayport Editorial Team | Financial Freedom, Financial Wellness, Self Help | Comments are Closed | 18 November, 2024 | 12

Online shopping has made it easier to get what you need without leaving home, with everything from appliances to groceries. However, with this convenience comes the risk of online scams, that can impact your finances and peace of mind, which is not a great way to spend the festive season. Here’s what you need to know to shop safely online.

    Common online shopping scams

    1. Fake online stores:
Scammers set up fake stores that look legitimate, often advertising “exclusive” deals. Once you order, the product may never arrive, or you receive something completely different or of poor quality.
Tip: Before purchasing, research the website. Check reviews and verify the site’s security by ensuring it starts with “https”. If a deal looks too good to be true, it probably is.
    2. Phishing scams:
These scams involve emails or messages that appear to be from a retailer, asking for personal information like bank details or login credentials. Once the scammers get this information, they can steal your identity or access your accounts.
Tip: Avoid clicking on links in unsolicited emails. Instead, go directly to the retailer’s website to verify any offers or notifications, or updates about your order.
    3. Counterfeit goods:
Scammers often sell fake products that imitate popular brands at reduced prices. These products are usually of low quality and potentially unsafe.
Tip: Be cautious when shopping on third-party platforms or social media. Stick to reputable retailers or official brand websites to ensure you get what you pay for.
    4. Non-delivery of goods:
In these cases, you pay, but the item is never delivered. Scammers may even send fake tracking numbers or make excuses to delay the delivery to buy time until it’s too late to reverse the transaction.
Tip: Always check the return and refund policies before purchasing and use trusted payment methods that offer buyer protection, like credit cards. Be wary of sellers who insist on payments via bank transfers or e-wallet services.

    How to protect yourself:

    • Research the seller: Look for reviews on trusted consumer sites and social media platforms. Be wary of sites with limited information or no clear contact details.
    • Secure payment methods: Opt for secure payment gateways, such as PayPal or credit cards, which offer buyer protection. Avoid wire transfers or direct bank deposits, as these are harder to trace and recover.
    • Keep an eye on your bank statements: Regularly check for unauthorised transactions, which can help detect fraud early and limit the damage if you do fall victim to a scam.
    • Enable two-factor authentication: For extra security, use two-factor authentication wherever possible. This added security, makes it harder for scammers to access your information.
    • Keep software updated: Ensure your personal computer, smartphone, and any software you use to shop online are updated to protect against security vulnerabilities.

By following these tips, you can enjoy the benefits of online shopping while keeping your money safe. Bayport is here to support your financial security. Visit our Bayport Academy for free courses.
